Julian Smart

Julian is head of the BLM professional indemnity practice group.  He is instructed by insurers to defend negligence claims against a broad range of professionals including: accountants, financial advisors, brokers, surveyors, solicitors and construction professionals.  In addition to defending professionals and advising insurers on policy coverage, Julian and his team continue to build expertise in cases involving fraud, and dishonesty.

Julian is recognised as a ‘leading individual’ in Chambers and Partners; with clients describing him as ‘leading a very strong team’ and being ‘highly able’ as well as ‘very calm and clear in terms of thinking and articulating’.

Julian successfully defended a management consultant in £60m High Court proceedings (Stokors SA and others v IG Markets Ltd [2013]) in which investors on the foreign exchange markets alleged dishonest assistance in breach of trust.  He was also successful in striking out a High Court negligence against a firm of solicitors (Hobson v West London Law [2013]).

Julian is frequently instructed by insurers to policy coverage and he has also built up significant experience in urgently obtaining injunctions to maximise the prospects of recovering funds for insurers by freezing and tracing assets.
